Willpower vs Environment - Part Two
As mentioned in the last post Greg Beck is deeply into “Willpower Won’t Work” by Benjamin Hardy. It is still opening his eyes and we wanted to share the latest learning.
In the earliest stages of the book he talks about structuring your environment so you don’t have to tap willpower as often. He is now clarifying that the point isn’t to avoid using willpower but making sure it is only applied to the highest value added activities.
He tells a story of a businesswoman who works 18 hour days for two to three weeks at a stretch. Her office environment is spartan with no distractions. She gets a phenomenal amount of work done. But then she takes a week or two off without any work distractions other than the bare minimum to ensure things are running smoothly. After recharging, she repeats they cycle.
So the question to you is what are your distraction free high impact work plans/environments and what are your distraction free high impact recovery periods? It is odd to think of recovery as “high impact” but he is onto something here…
